Early Influences
Power's passion for teaching began at a young age. She was inspired by her parents, who were both teachers, and she loved to play school with her siblings. After graduating from Yale University, Power worked as a journalist in Bosnia and Rwanda. Her experiences in these war-torn countries convinced her of the importance of education in promoting peace and stability.
Teaching in a Refugee Camp
In 1995, Power volunteered to teach English to refugees in a camp in Kenya. She was immediately struck by the students' eagerness to learn, despite the difficult circumstances they faced. Power taught her students using textbooks that she had brought with her, as well as materials that she created herself. She also organized field trips and other activities to help her students learn about the world outside the camp.
Teaching at Harvard Law School
In 2002, Power joined the faculty of Harvard Law School. She taught courses on international law, human rights, and humanitarian intervention. Power's teaching style was innovative and engaging. She used case studies, simulations, and guest speakers to bring her students to life. She also encouraged her students to think critically about the world around them and to challenge the status quo.
The Challenges of Teaching
Teaching is not without its challenges. Power writes about the long hours, the difficult students, and the constant need to stay up-to-date on the latest research. She also discusses the emotional toll that teaching can take, especially when her students face difficult challenges.
The Rewards of Teaching
Despite the challenges, Power writes that teaching is the most rewarding job she has ever had. She loves connecting with her students and helping them to learn and grow. She also appreciates the opportunity to make a difference in the world, one student at a time.
In The Education of an Idealist, Samantha Power offers a candid and inspiring account of her experiences as a teacher. She writes about the challenges and rewards of teaching, and the role that education can play in shaping young lives. Power's memoir is a must-read for anyone who is interested in teaching, or who is interested in the power of education to change the world.
