Insomnia: Poems by Lenard Moore
In his 2016 collection of poems, Insomnia, Lenard Moore explores the experience of sleeplessness with a depth and intimacy that is both haunting and illuminating. Through vivid imagery and a profound understanding of the human psyche, Moore captures the restless thoughts, fractured dreams, and elusive nature of sleep that define the insomniac's night.
Themes
The overarching theme of Insomnia is, of course, sleeplessness. Moore examines the physical, emotional, and psychological effects of insomnia, from the weary body that longs for rest to the racing mind that refuses to quiet. In "Insomnia," the speaker confesses:

"I lie awake in the dark, my mind / a kaleidoscope of thoughts / that spin and dance and taunt me."
Insomnia is also a meditation on the nature of time. The insomniac's night stretches endlessly, each minute a torment. In "The Long Night," Moore writes:
"The night is a slow, relentless beast / that grinds me down to dust / with its heavy, unforgiving paws."
The insomniac's experience of time is also distorted by the lack of sleep. Dreams and reality blur, and the past and present become intertwined. In "Memory," the speaker recalls a lost love:
"I dream of you again last night, / your laughter echoing in the empty room. / I reach out to touch you, / but you are gone, a ghost / in the labyrinth of my mind."
Loss and grief are other important themes in Insomnia. The insomniac often finds themselves haunted by the memories of those they have lost. In "Elegy," Moore writes:
"I cannot sleep, my mind / a graveyard of lost hopes / and shattered dreams. / I hear your voice in the wind, / but when I turn to look, / you are gone."
Imagery
Moore uses a rich and evocative imagery to create a vivid and sensory experience of insomnia. The darkness of the night is a constant presence, a suffocating blanket that weighs heavy on the insomniac's mind. In "Darkness," Moore writes:
"The darkness is a living thing, / a creature that feeds on my fear / and grows stronger with each passing hour."
Dreams are another recurring image in Insomnia. They are often fragmented and surreal, reflecting the insomniac's fractured state of mind. In "Dream," Moore writes:
"I dream of flying through the night, / my body light and free. / But then I start to fall, / and I wake up in a cold sweat, / my heart pounding in my chest."
Techniques
Moore uses a variety of techniques to create the unique and haunting atmosphere of Insomnia. One of the most striking is his use of repetition. In "Insomnia," the speaker repeats the phrase "I cannot sleep" over and over again, creating a sense of urgency and desperation.
Another effective technique is Moore's use of fragmentation. Many of the poems in Insomnia are short and fragmented, reflecting the insomniac's fractured state of mind. In "Memory," the speaker's thoughts jump from one moment to the next, creating a sense of disorientation and confusion.
Insomnia: Poems by Lenard Moore is a powerful and moving exploration of the experience of sleeplessness. Through vivid imagery, a profound understanding of the human psyche, and a skillful use of technique, Moore captures the restless thoughts, fractured dreams, and elusive nature of sleep that define the insomniac's night.
Moore's poems are not only a testament to the challenges of insomnia, but also a celebration of the human spirit's ability to endure and find solace even in the darkest of nights.
