Complete MDMA Synthesis: A Comprehensive Guide for First-Time Chemists
MDMA, also known as ecstasy or molly, is a psychoactive drug that produces feelings of euphoria, empathy, and heightened senses. It is a popular recreational drug, but it can also be dangerous if not taken responsibly.
MDMA is a relatively simple drug to synthesize, but there are still several steps involved in the process. This guide will walk you through the complete MDMA synthesis process, from start to finish.
You will need the following materials to synthesize MDMA:

- 100 grams of safrole
- 100 grams of sodium hydroxide
- 100 grams of isopropanol
- 50 grams of hydrochloric acid
- 50 grams of sodium carbonate
- 25 grams of potassium permanganate
- 25 grams of sodium thiosulfate
- 10 grams of ascorbic acid
- 5 grams of magnesium sulfate
- 1 liter of water
- 500 ml of diethyl ether
- 500 ml of hexane
- 250 ml of chloroform
- 100 ml of methanol
- Glassware: round-bottomed flask, condenser, reflux condenser, separatory funnel, filter paper, Buchner funnel, vacuum flask
- Safety equipment: gloves, goggles, respirator
- Safrole extraction
The first step in the MDMA synthesis process is to extract safrole from sassafras oil. Safrole is a volatile oil that is found in the bark of the sassafras tree.
To extract safrole, you will need to distill the sassafras oil. You can do this using a simple distillation apparatus.
Once you have distilled the sassafras oil, you will need to separate the safrole from the other components of the oil. You can do this using a separatory funnel.
- Safrole reduction
The next step is to reduce the safrole to isosafrole. This can be done using a variety of reducing agents, but the most common is sodium borohydride.
To reduce the safrole, you will need to dissolve it in a solvent, such as isopropanol. You will then need to add the reducing agent to the solution and stir.
The reaction will take several hours to complete. Once the reaction is complete, you will need to filter the solution to remove the sodium borohydride.
- Isosafrole oxidation
The next step is to oxidize the isosafrole to MDMA. This can be done using a variety of oxidizing agents, but the most common is potassium permanganate.
To oxidize the isosafrole, you will need to dissolve it in a solvent, such as chloroform. You will then need to add the oxidizing agent to the solution and stir.
The reaction will take several hours to complete. Once the reaction is complete, you will need to filter the solution to remove the potassium permanganate.
- MDMA extraction
The final step is to extract the MDMA from the reaction mixture. This can be done using a variety of solvents, but the most common is diethyl ether.
To extract the MDMA, you will need to add the reaction mixture to a separatory funnel. You will then need to add diethyl ether to the separatory funnel and shake.
The MDMA will dissolve in the diethyl ether. You will then need to separate the diethyl ether layer from the water layer.
- MDMA crystallization
The MDMA will crystallize out of the diethyl ether solution. You can speed up the crystallization process by placing the solution in a freezer.
Once the MDMA has crystallized, you will need to filter the crystals to remove the diethyl ether.
MDMA synthesis can be dangerous if not done properly. It is important to follow the safety instructions carefully.
- Wear gloves, goggles, and a respirator when handling chemicals.
- Do not smoke or eat while working in the lab.
- Keep the lab well-ventilated.
- Dispose of chemicals properly.
MDMA synthesis is a relatively simple process, but it is important to follow the safety instructions carefully. By following these instructions, you can safely synthesize MDMA for your own use.
