He studied classical music at the Juilliard School of Music, but dropped out after two years to pursue a career in rock and roll.
Early Career
Joel's early career was marked by a series of unsuccessful attempts at stardom. He released his first album, Cold Spring Harbor, in 1971, but it failed to chart. He followed up with Piano Man in 1973, which was a modest success. However, it wasn't until the release of his third album, Turnstiles, in 1976, that Joel finally achieved mainstream success.
Breakthrough
Turnstiles featured the hit singles "Just the Way You Are" and "She's Always a Woman." The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Joel as one of the most popular singer-songwriters of the 1970s. He followed up Turnstiles with a string of hit albums, including The Stranger (1977),52nd Street (1978),Glass Houses (1980),and Songs in the Attic (1981).
Later Career
Joel continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He also toured extensively and became one of the biggest live acts in the world. In 1993, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has continued to release new music and tour in recent years.
